Thumbnail Designer Pricing in India: What to Charge in 2026

There is no fixed thumbnail price in India. The fair way to set yours is simple: estimate how long one thumbnail really takes you (including revisions and talking to the client), decide what an hour of your time is worth at your skill level, and multiply. Then add packages, clear revision rules and 50% upfront. This guide walks through each step, gives example ranges clearly labelled as estimates, and ends with a rate-card template you can copy.

For one real reference point: Shinel Studios charges clients ₹499 per thumbnail on our public rate card. That is what a studio charges a creator, including briefing, revisions and delivery. It is not what a studio pays an artist, so do not read it as an artist rate.

Step 1: Measure your real time per thumbnail

Most new GFX artists underprice because they count only the Photoshop time. Time the whole job for your next five thumbnails:

  • Brief and references: reading the brief, watching part of the video, finding the frame.
  • Concepts: sketching two or three ideas.
  • Design: cut-outs, background, lighting, colour, text.
  • Checks: viewing it at small size on a phone, in light and dark mode.
  • Revisions: each round of changes.
  • Messages: back-and-forth on WhatsApp or Discord.

Add it up and divide by five. That average is your real time per thumbnail. It is usually more than you expect.

Step 2: Decide your hourly value

Your hourly value depends on skill, speed and how reliably you deliver. Here is a simple way to estimate market ranges. These are our estimates for illustration, not survey data:

LevelExample time per thumbnailExample hourly valueEstimated price per thumbnail
Beginner (first clients, simple cut-out and text)1.5 hours₹200about ₹300
Experienced (strong portfolio, steady clients)2 hours₹500about ₹1,000
Niche specialist (heavy compositing, known style in one niche)3 hours₹800about ₹2,400

The reasoning: a beginner working 1.5 hours at ₹200 an hour needs about ₹300 to be paid fairly for the time. An experienced artist spending 2 hours at ₹500 an hour needs about ₹1,000. A specialist doing detailed 3D or painted work for 3 hours at ₹800 an hour lands near ₹2,400. Your numbers will differ. The method is what matters.

Step 3: Adjust for the client and niche

Some things reasonably push the price up or down:

  • Channel size and monetization. A monetized channel earns from every extra click, so it can usually pay more. Many studios, Shinel included, have a lower price for channels that are not yet monetized.
  • Niche difficulty. A devotional channel with a clean deity image and one line of Hindi text is simpler than a gaming thumbnail with multiple characters, effects and a custom background.
  • Assets provided. If the creator sends a good face photo shot for the thumbnail, the job is faster. If you have to pull a blurry frame from a dark stream and fix it, it takes longer.
  • Rush delivery. Same-day work pushes other jobs back. Charge for it. Our own client rush fee is 25% extra, which is one reference.
  • Volume. A creator who books 8 thumbnails a month saves you time on finding clients, so a small per-piece discount is fair.

Step 4: Build packages, not just single prices

Single thumbnails are fine for new clients, but monthly bundles give you steady income. Three common package types:

  1. Per thumbnail. Good for trial work and occasional clients.
  2. Monthly bundle. A fixed number of thumbnails per month (for example 4, 8 or 12) at a slightly lower per-piece price, paid at the start of the month.
  3. Channel kit. Thumbnails plus a banner, profile picture, end screen and a few social graphics, priced as one project.

A worked example (illustrative): if your single price is ₹1,000, a monthly bundle of 8 could be ₹7,200 (₹900 each). You give a small discount and get a predictable month of work.

Step 5: Decide what is included

Write these down before you start, so nobody argues later.

  • Revisions. Two rounds of changes is a common, fair standard. Shinel includes 2 revision rounds per deliverable, and an extra round costs clients ₹299. Define a revision: changes to the same concept. A completely new idea is a new thumbnail.
  • Concepts. One concept or two? Two genuinely different ideas for one title is a strong offer, and it is something studios look for when they hire.
  • Source file. Decide whether the PSD is included. Many artists deliver only the final JPG or PNG and charge extra for the layered file, because the source file lets the client reuse your work.
  • File spec. Deliver to YouTube's spec: 1280x720, 16:9, under 2MB, JPG, PNG or GIF.
  • Turnaround. State it clearly. Shinel's client turnaround for thumbnails is 24 to 48 hours; set yours based on your real capacity.
  • Usage. The client can use the thumbnail on YouTube and social posts. You may show it in your portfolio after the video is public.

Step 6: Set payment terms

  • 50% upfront is common. Shinel asks new clients for 50% upfront and the balance on delivery. For new clients, this protects you from doing work that never gets paid.
  • Full advance for monthly bundles. Ask for the month's payment at the start, or half at the start and half mid-month.
  • Watermarked previews. Send a watermarked or low-resolution preview until the balance is paid.
  • Use UPI or a bank transfer with a simple invoice. Keep a record of every payment. Do not start the next job if the last one is unpaid.

Free tool: Before you send a thumbnail, score it with our thumbnail clickability checker and check it at real sizes in the thumbnail previewer. Clients pay more for artists who check their own work.

Common pricing mistakes

  • Pricing per hour on the invoice. Clients compare per-piece prices. Use your hourly value to set the price, but quote per thumbnail.
  • Unlimited revisions. This turns one thumbnail into five. Always cap revisions.
  • Matching the cheapest marketplace price. You cannot compete on price forever. Compete on clear, fast, reliable work in a niche.
  • Never raising prices. Review your rate card every few months. Raise it for new clients first.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a beginner charge for a YouTube thumbnail in India?

Start from your real time per thumbnail and a modest hourly value. As an example, 1.5 hours at ₹200 an hour works out to about ₹300, and you can raise it as your portfolio grows.

Should I give the PSD source file to clients?

It is your choice, but many artists deliver only the final image and charge extra for the layered file. Write your decision on your rate card so the client knows before paying.

How many revisions should a thumbnail price include?

Two revision rounds on the same concept is a common and fair standard. Charge for extra rounds and treat a completely new idea as a new thumbnail.

Should I ask for payment upfront?

Yes, especially with new clients. Taking 50% upfront and the balance on delivery is common and protects you from unpaid work.

What does Shinel Studios charge for a thumbnail?

Our public client price per thumbnail is listed on our pricing page and rate card. That is what a studio charges creators, including briefing and revisions, not what it pays artists.
