Bitrate and file size, both ways.

Know what size your export will be before you render, or the exact bitrate that fits a limit like Discord's 20 MB. Audio is included and every platform limit is checked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a video's file size from its bitrate?

Add the video and audio bitrates (in kilobits per second), multiply by the length in seconds, divide by 8 to get kilobytes, then by 1,000 for megabytes. 8 Mbps video plus 384 kbps audio for 10 minutes is (8,000 + 384) x 600 / 8 / 1,000 = about 629 MB, plus around 1% for the MP4 container.

What bitrate do I need to fit a video under 20 MB for Discord?

Divide the size by the length: 20 MB is 160,000 kilobits, so a 30-second clip can use about 5,300 kbps in total. Take off the audio (for example 128 kbps) and leave a few percent of headroom: export the video at roughly 5,000 kbps with 2-pass encoding. Put your own numbers into the calculator above.

Why is my file bigger than the calculator says?

Single-pass VBR overshoots on busy scenes, and some apps add more audio or a higher bitrate than you set. Use 2-pass (or a constrained maximum) when a size limit matters, and keep the headroom setting at 3-5%.

MB or MiB: which do platforms mean?

Platforms quote megabytes, and this calculator uses 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, which is the stricter reading for a limit. Windows shows sizes in MiB (1,048,576 bytes) but labels them MB, so a '20 MB' file in File Explorer is about 21 MB here.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser.
