How to compress a GIF
- Drop the GIF. Drag your GIF onto the drop zone. It is decoded on your device.
- Choose how small. Use the Smaller / Sharper slider, or set width, fps and colours yourself. The estimate updates as you move them.
- Trim if you can. Cutting the GIF shorter is the most effective way to make it smaller. Drag the filmstrip handles.
- Compress. Press Compress GIF and compare the before and after sizes.
- Still too big?. Convert it to MP4 instead: an MP4 of the same animation is usually 5 to 20 times smaller and plays everywhere GIFs do.

How do I reduce a GIF's file size?
In order of impact: make it shorter, make it narrower (half the width is about a quarter of the size), lower the frame rate to 10 to 15 fps, use fewer colours (64 is plenty for screen recordings and cartoons), and reuse pixels that did not change between frames. This tool does all five and shows the size before you commit.
Will compressing a GIF lower its quality?
Some settings are invisible (merging repeated frames, reusing unchanged pixels, dropping frames above 15 fps); others trade quality for size (fewer colours, smaller width). The Smaller / Sharper slider lets you choose, and you see the result before downloading.
How do I get a GIF under 10 MB for Discord?
Drop it here; if it is far over, lower the width to 480 px and the fps to 12 first. If it still does not fit, convert it to MP4: Discord plays MP4 inline and the same clip is usually under 1 MB.
Is it better to send an MP4 than a GIF?
For chat apps, usually yes. Discord, Slack, X, WhatsApp and Telegram all play MP4 inline, and many quietly convert uploaded GIFs to MP4 anyway. Keep GIF for places that only accept images: some forums, email signatures and README files.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device. Your video, GIF or images are never uploaded to Shinel Studios or anyone else, which is also why there is no queue, no file-size paywall and no watermark.
