How to compress a video to a target size

- Trim the extra. Cut the start and end you do not need on the filmstrip: fewer seconds means more quality per second.

Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video for Discord?
Choose the Discord preset. The free Discord upload limit is 10 MB, so the tool aims a little under it (about 9.5 MB) to leave room for the file container, works out the bitrate from your clip's length, and only lowers the resolution or frame rate when the bitrate would otherwise turn the picture to mush.
How do I make a video smaller to send on WhatsApp or by email?
Use the WhatsApp (16 MB) or Email (25 MB) preset. Gmail and Outlook cap attachments at 25 MB. Trimming the clip first is the biggest win: every second you cut gives the rest more quality.
Why did my compressed video get bigger?
Because a re-encode at a higher bitrate than the original only adds bytes. That is a common mistake in other compressors. This tool reads the original bitrate and never goes above it, and if the file already fits your target it tells you so.
MP4 or WebM?
MP4 with H.264 plays everywhere: phones, Discord, WhatsApp, Windows, Macs and smart TVs. WebM (VP9 or AV1) can be 30 to 45% smaller at the same quality and works in browsers, Discord and Android, but not everywhere on iPhone. Pick MP4 unless you know WebM works where it is going.
Does compressing remove the sound?
No, audio is kept at 96 to 128 kbps, which is clear for speech and music. It is only lowered (to 64 or 48 kbps) when a very long clip has to fit a small size, and you can remove it entirely to give the picture every bit.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device. Your video, GIF or images are never uploaded to Shinel Studios or anyone else, which is also why there is no queue, no file-size paywall and no watermark. Once the converter has loaded you could even go offline and it would keep working (the backup engine, when a file needs it, is a one-time download).

Which browsers does it work in?
Any current browser on desktop or phone. Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, Safari 16.4+ and Firefox 130+ use the fast WebCodecs engine (hardware video decoding). If your browser cannot read a file directly, for example an iPhone HEVC video in Firefox, or an AVI or WMV file, the tool switches to a backup engine (ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly). It is slower and downloads about 31 MB once, but reads almost any format.
