How to convert a GIF to MP4

- Optional edits. Trim, crop to 1:1 or 9:16 for Instagram, change speed or make it a boomerang.

Why convert a GIF to MP4?
Size and reach. An MP4 of the same animation is usually 5 to 20 times smaller because video compression only stores what changes. And Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts accept MP4 but not GIF uploads as video.
Will the MP4 loop like a GIF?
The file itself plays once, but every major app loops short videos: Instagram Reels, X, Discord, Slack, Telegram and WhatsApp all repeat it. On a website, use the video tag with autoplay, loop, muted and playsinline, and it behaves exactly like a GIF at a fraction of the weight.
Is the quality the same as the GIF?
It usually looks better: a GIF is limited to 256 colours, while the MP4 has millions, so the dither noise in the GIF is reproduced faithfully without extra banding. Frame timing is copied from the GIF frame by frame.
What happens to transparent GIFs?
MP4 has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. For a transparent animation on a website, keep the GIF or use an animated WebP or PNG instead.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, on your own device. Your video, GIF or images are never uploaded to Shinel Studios or anyone else, which is also why there is no queue, no file-size paywall and no watermark. Once the converter has loaded you could even go offline and it would keep working (the backup engine, when a file needs it, is a one-time download).
