How to type in Hindi with an English keyboard
- Choose Hindi or Marathi. Pick the language above the box. Both use the Devanagari script.
- Type the sound in English letters. Write the word as it sounds: namaste, bharat, shukriya. Long vowels can be doubled (aa, ee, oo) but you do not have to.
- Pick the word. A list of Hindi spellings appears. Press Space or Enter to take the first one, the arrow keys to choose another, or Esc to keep English.
- Use the keyboard for anything unusual. Open the keyboard button on the box for letters such as ङ, ञ or ऋ and signs such as ँ or ॐ.
- Copy. Press Copy text and paste it into WhatsApp, YouTube, Word or anywhere else. It is standard Unicode Hindi.
How the English to Hindi spelling works
Every consonant has an inherent "a" sound, so "kamal" becomes कमल without typing anything for the a. Two consonants together join into a conjunct: "kya" is क्या, "shri" is श्री, "kshatriya" is क्षत्रिय. An "n" or "m" before another consonant becomes the dot on top (anusvara), so "hindi" is हिंदी.
Hindi has sounds English letters cannot tell apart, like त and ट or द and ड. The first suggestion is the common one; the others in the list cover the rest. Capital letters force the hard sounds if you want them: T for ट, D for ड, N for ण, Sh for ष.
