How to type in Punjabi (Gurmukhi) with an English keyboard
- Type the sound in English letters. Write the word as you would in a message: sat sri akal, panjab, gurpreet singh.
- Pick the Gurmukhi word. Press Space or Enter for the first suggestion, the arrow keys for another, or Esc to keep the English.
- Double a letter for addak. Type kk, tt or pp and the tool adds the addak (ੱ): pakka becomes ਪੱਕਾ.
- Use the keyboard for special letters. Open the keyboard for ੴ, ੲ, ੳ, ਙ, ਞ or the nukta letters ਸ਼ ਖ਼ ਗ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ ਲ਼.
- Copy. Press Copy text. It is standard Unicode Gurmukhi, so it works in WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube and Word.
Tippi, bindi and addak, handled for you
Gurmukhi has two nasal dots. Tippi (ੰ) goes with short vowels, bindi (ਂ) with long ones: "panjab" is ਪੰਜਾਬ with a tippi, "nahin" is ਨਹੀਂ with a bindi. The tool picks the right one from the vowel before it.
A doubled consonant in English becomes the addak, the small mark that doubles a sound: "pakka" is ਪੱਕਾ, "gall" is ਗੱਲ. Clusters with r, h and v use the subscript forms: "shri" is ਸ਼੍ਰੀ, "gurpreet" is ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ.
