Bold text for posts that have no bold button.

Most social apps do not let you bold a word. Bold Unicode letters fix that: they look bold to every reader on every phone. There are two main kinds, serif bold (𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝) and sans bold (𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱). Sans bold matches the interface font of most apps and looks cleaner.

Back to plain text

Paste fancy text (cursive, bold, glitch, upside down, bubbles) to get normal letters back, for example to make it searchable or readable.

Serif or sans bold?

Sans bold (𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱) blends with the fonts Instagram, LinkedIn, X and Facebook use, so it looks like real bold. Serif bold (𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝) stands out more and suits headings or a classic look. Both count as two characters on X.

Use real bold where it exists

Discord (**bold**), WhatsApp (*bold*), Telegram and YouTube comments (*bold*) have real formatting. It stays readable to screen readers and searchable, so use it there and keep bold Unicode for apps without formatting.

The cost of bold Unicode

Search on LinkedIn, X, Instagram and YouTube does not match bold Unicode to plain words, and screen readers may spell it out. One bold line per post, a hook or a heading, is the honest sweet spot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make bold text on Instagram or LinkedIn?

Neither has a bold button in posts. Type the words here, copy Bold sans and paste. It looks bold to everyone.

Is bold Unicode the same as real bold?

No. Real bold is formatting on normal letters; bold Unicode is a different set of characters. It looks the same but search and screen readers treat it differently.

Why does bold text count double on X?

X counts most characters outside basic Latin as two, and bold Unicode letters are outside that range.

Which apps have real bold?

Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and YouTube comments support real bold with symbols like **bold** or *bold*.

Does bold Unicode work everywhere?

On current iPhones, Android phones and computers, yes. It does not work in usernames, and some games show boxes.
