YouTube fonts for your channel, without hurting search.

Fancy text works in your YouTube channel name, description, community posts and comments. It also has a real cost: YouTube search reads plain letters, so a fancy word in a title or name is a word nobody can find. Use it where it decorates, not where it ranks.

YouTube Studio shows its own counter; we use the stricter figure we have seen.

Counted the strict way: many fancy letters are stored as 2 characters, so if it fits here, it fits in the app.

What works on YouTube

  • Channel names, channel descriptions, community posts, comments and live chat accept fancy letters and show them on the web, phone and TV apps.
  • Bold sans letters in a description are a common way to make section headers stand out, since descriptions have no formatting.
  • Plain *bold*, _italic_ and -strike- formatting works in comments on YouTube, and it stays readable.

Known problems

  • YouTube search does not match fancy letters to plain ones. A title or channel name in fancy letters loses the search traffic for those words. Style one decorative word at most.
  • Glitch text in comments may be collapsed or hidden by YouTube's spam filters, and it is unreadable on TV apps.
  • Smart TV and console apps have the smallest fonts; circled and squared letters can show as boxes there.

Tips for YouTube

  • Keep your channel name searchable: plain letters for the name people type, decoration around it if you want style.
  • Use bold sans letters as headers in long descriptions (CHAPTERS, LINKS, GEAR). It reads better than all caps.
  • Handles cannot use fancy letters. They are your searchable identity, so choose them carefully.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a fancy font in my YouTube channel name?

Yes, YouTube accepts Unicode letters in the channel name. Be careful: YouTube search reads plain letters, so a fully fancy name is harder to find. Many channels keep the name plain and add a styled symbol or word around it.

Do fancy fonts in YouTube titles hurt views?

They can. Search cannot match fancy letters to the words people type, and screen readers spell them out. One styled word for emphasis is fine; a whole title in fancy letters loses search traffic.

How do I make bold text in a YouTube description?

Descriptions have no formatting, so creators use bold Unicode letters for headers. Type the header here, copy the bold style and paste it into the description.

Can I use fancy text in my YouTube handle?

No. Handles accept letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens and periods only. Put the styled version in your channel name, which shows above the handle.

Does YouTube show fancy fonts on TV?

Mostly yes for bold, italic and cursive. Rarer symbols, circled letters and glitch text can show as boxes or overlap on TV and console apps.
