Discord fonts for names, channels and chat.

Discord is where fancy text gets used the most: styled display names, aesthetic channel names like ┃・general, and server banners. Discord also has its own Markdown, which is better for plain bold and strikethrough in chat. This page covers both.

What works on Discord

  • Display names, server nicknames, About me, custom status, server names and channel names all accept fancy letters on desktop and mobile.
  • Small caps and symbols such as ┃, ・, ✦ and ꒰ ꒱ are the usual way to make channel lists look tidy.
  • For bold, italics, underline and strikethrough inside messages, Discord Markdown (**bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strike~~) is better: it stays readable and searchable.

Known problems

  • Many servers run moderation bots that delete messages or rename members with glitch (Zalgo) text, and it overlaps the line above in chat.
  • Members search and @mention by name. A fully fancy name is hard to @mention; some servers require a typeable nickname for that reason.
  • Letter tiles (regional indicators) side by side can turn into country flags in Discord's emoji font.

Tips for Discord

  • Use Markdown for chat and fancy text for names. Markdown bold is real bold that screen readers and search understand.
  • Keep one typeable part in your server nickname so people can @mention you.
  • Channel names on Discord turn spaces into dashes; paste the styled text and Discord keeps the characters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a fancy font in Discord?

Discord has no font picker. Type your text here, copy a style and paste it into your display name, nickname, About me, a channel name or a message. For plain bold or strikethrough in chat, use Discord Markdown instead: **bold** and ~~strike~~.

Can I use fancy text in my Discord username?

No. Usernames take lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Your display name and server nicknames can be fancy.

Why was my fancy nickname changed in a server?

Many servers run moderation bots that reset names nobody can type or @mention, especially glitch text. Keep part of the name in plain letters.

How do people make aesthetic channel names?

With small caps or bold letters plus separator symbols, for example ┃・ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀʟ. Type the channel name here, pick Small caps, and add the symbols with the symbol picker.

What is the Discord message limit?

2,000 characters, or 4,000 with Nitro. Fancy letters usually count as two characters, so a fancy message fits fewer letters.
